The legend of TYPHOEUS is one that begins deep below Sicily’s lush and fertile soil. In ancient mythology, Tifeo is the son of Gaea, or Mother Earth, and the god of the underworld, Tartarus. He was banished to Mount Etna after an epic battle with the supreme god, Zeus, and in local lore, it is the lingering spirit of Typhoeus locked below the earth that is responsible for the eruptions of our majestic, revered volcano.
This is the narrative that inspired us to launch TYPHOEUS in 2020, in Acireale, a small town on the slopes of Etna rich in fragrant citrus groves, storied vines and fruit trees.
Like the volcano herself with TYPHOEUS within, our company is powered by a deeply held passion.
Our fruit is hand-harvested at its peak, from February to October, and we adhere strictly to local recipes and production methods.
Our philosophy is that if we dedicate ourselves to tradition, to studying the land, but also observing and respecting those mythical, natural forces at work, we can capture the essence of the island, its culture, and the spirit so unique to our beloved Bella Sicilia.
Drawing on this ancient story, we share Sicily through our modern products. HYDRA and CHIMÆRA are expressions not only of Sicily’s abundant natural resources, but the soul of its people and history, the real and imagined, the mystical and tangible.
The results are liqueurs with very real flavor and a powerful sense of place.
